The story of Amy
Back in 2014 I had my first born son, I was Induced and suffered a traumatic birth resulting in an emergency cesarean. I suffered a severe hemorrhage and did not recover well. I has an 11lb baby boy. After my body refused blood transfusions and started clotting in my kidneys I was transferred to ICU for further tests. My incredible kindey consultant (after a week of tests and lots of uncertainty) I was diagnosed with aHUS- a very rare kidney disorder. I was treated for the next few weeks with around 12 sessions of plasma exchange and I recoverd. After a long 6 weeks in hospital i was home with my baby!
We had tests carried out on my family members and lots of investigations went on surrounding the aHUS and we soo learnt that it is genetic.
I was monitored with regular blood tests. I have since had another babu with no complications at all and lead a normal life.
If it wasn’t for research and my consultant who had read about aHUS I think it would be a very different story!
I now have a healthy 7 and 9 year old and leave an active, healthy lifestyle with no further treatment. I am always very aware they any illness could trigger another episode but thanks to all the research and awareness we know what go look for!
