Recovering from Guillain Barre Syndrome

The story of Anita

It was 1990, when i became severley ill with what i now know as Guillain Barre Syndrome.I was a Mummy of 2 kids and only 23 at the time.
What a journey i was in for needless to say i had no idea what i was about to encounter.
Guillain Barre eats away your Milne sheath, dont care too much for the medical terminologies, it is what it is and it sucks big time. You know when you know your own world and you are at peace with that, then Guillain Barre comes along and kaboom nothing ever is the same EVER. From becoming increasingly tired to just down right forgetfull this illness has the potential to ruin lives, families and marriages,. due to its horrific nature. We become big eared and still bodied, there is no other wayto describe it. We cant move we cant do anything that we used to do, now tie your hands and feet together and hold your breath until you cant anymore, thats US trying to get air in and out of our lungs but the paralysis is getting to be too much so i CANT breathe in and out.
My journey through GBS is horrific, but i dont regret getting it, it has changed my life for the better altho always a positive person this made me even more positive i wanted to feel the air again and live life again, here is my second chance.
My recovery was nothing short of a miracle, i started at Physio even when i still had my trachea because they didnt wannt the motor skills diminishing even more, so i was transferred to Essendon rehab just beofre Xmas 1990, My neurologist was going on leave till the 6th of Feb with what little movement i had i wrote him a note saying I WONT BE HERE. He said that’s fantastic if thtas your goal then hopefully you will achieve it, but just dont expect it to become a reality. Well you know what it did, i made sure that i went to all Physiotherpsists appt’s and OT every day no matter how tired i was i pushed it and kept pushing, walked out on my 2 canes on the 8th day of February 1991 2 months later given a 100% clean bill of health.
