The story of Sarah
I am 33 years old and was diagnosed with Cushings Disease in January of 2011. I underwent three transphenoidal removals of a pituitary adenoma to treat the tumour but ultimately the Cushings returned each time. The tumour was just too small and difficult to remove. I was being treated with medication for about a year but we finally had to take more aggressive action and I had a bilateral adrenalectomy a year ago. I am finally seeing some improvement in my Cushings symptoms but now I am dependant on steroid therapy to live and am in danger of going into adrenal crisis if I am not careful. It is a small price to pay for an overall better quality of life but I hope that more research and developments can be made in treating this disease so that other people won’t have to travel the same bumpy road that I have.
