It might slow me down but MD won’t stop me

The story of Brad

My name is Brad.

I’m from Ontario, Canada.

At age 10 I was diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness which will eventually take away my ability to do many things people simply take for granted.

This rare neuromuscular disorder often leads to difficulties walking, running and standing for a long period of time. Other issues include difficulty getting up from a low seated position and eventually the inability to climb steps and stairs. Other issues may include frequent falls and fatigue.

The progression of Becker Muscular Dystrophy can be mild in some cases and more severe in others. Eventually men living with BMD will lose the ability to walk and require the use of a wheelchair. In my case I recently started using a mobility scooter due to my difficulties with walking, which put me at heightened risk for suffering falls and possible injuries.

Despite this I keep a positive attitude about things mainly due to my ability to connect with others, a true benefit from me choosing to start sharing my story. This has allowed me to connect with others in many different communities which really helps me to let me know I am no longer alone in my journey. It honestly keeps me in the fight which has also resulted in me on the hardest of days proudly saying MD won’t stop me.

That is why I am so thankful for Rare Disease Day as it gives us all an opportunity to share our stories. A day that unites us together with the added benefit of being able to learn more about each other’s lives which goes a long way in raising awareness and understanding.

As I age with Becker Muscular Dystrophy I still aim to remain positive while adapting to every challenge that comes my way. Sure I have dealt with a few issues of anxiety but just knowing other people understand is very comforting.

Another thing that helps me is knowing that even those outside the MD community can take advantage of Rare Disease Day to learn more about Muscular Dystrophy the same way I can use it to better understand the issues other people face.

When it comes down to it, sharing our stories can help others as well as future generations. So don’t hesitate to share your story after all someone might really benefit from hearing it.

In the end I am focused on living life to the fullest, enjoying the good moments in life and when a bad day comes I won’t give up as even though it might slow me down MD won’t stop me.
