Helpless and hopeful

The story of Amariah

3 years, I never would have thought 3 years ago that I’d still be battling Brucella. I contracted brucella from working with cattle. When I got diagnosed I thought “ok, no problem. I’ll take my antibiotics and be back to normal” but nothing about Brucella is normal. It’s been a life changing experience. It can be hard to imagine how isolating and helpless a rare disease can make you feel. Most of the time I know more about my disease than the medical professionals. If I had a dollar for every time a nurse or pharmacist asked me what Brucella was or said “that’s interesting, I’ve never heard of that”. Luckily I have found a great support group on facebook for others with my disease and some amazing doctors who took the time to listen to me. So while some times I feel helpless or like a victim I continue to be hopeful and work towards my goals in spite of this condition.Â
