Growing up with Galactosemia

The story of Anslee

I’m Anslee, I have an older brother and a younger sister. All three of have a rare metabolic disease called Galactosemia. Galactosemia is a disease that can kill if milk or dairy is injested into the body. Growing up with galactosemia has been rough, going to parties and not  being able to have cake, or ice cream, the kids that would mock us by eating stuff we can’t have and telling us how good it is. Through all of that we found the magic of Disney World. We figured out that at Disney there’s nothing we can’t have, if we want it, the chef is more than happy to make it for us. We have gone to Disney every year for the past ten of so years, and every trip is magical, something new. From food to rides to character interactions. There’s so much for us there. I am now in college at Wesleyan College, in Macon, Ga. I have had a few challenges with the dining hall this year, but I have overcome the challenge by going to talk to the manager and several others. It has been hard, but it’s been a great run. My rare disease has taught me that I can do anything, as long as I put my mind to it and talk to people. People don’t know if you don’t tell them.
