About DOCAS (District Outreach for Care and Support)
DOCAS has established the only Muscular Dystrophy Centre in Zimbabwe and the Southern African Region. The centre caters for 33 resident patients who come from very poor rural backgrounds. At the centre the children receive education, physical therapy, improved nutrition, entertainment, psychosocial support and quality care through the services of trained teachers and voluntary caregivers. The centre is also rolling out a cpmmumity-based rehabilitation program through which primary and secondary caregivers undergo a two-week training program so that they are able to care for patients at village level. We are also facilitating DNA testing of patients and those girls who come from affected families. We also train local health practitioners in the screening and management of DMD cases.
