On Feb 8 2010, Presidential Proclamation 1989 was signed declaring the last week of February as the “National Rare Disease Week” in the Philippines. Since then the occasion has been marked by hosting workshops, concerts, fundraising runs and press conferences, which have brought together different healthcare institutions, government agencies, civic organizations and volunteer organizations. Rare Disease Day has also been celebrated with ice skating, bowling and fireworks so that children living with a rare disease could spend a worry free day.
In 2020 the Philippines hosted its annual rare disease week on the theme ‘Rare is Many, Rare is Proud, Rare is Strong’ highlighting the shift towards increased equity for the rare disease community. The celebration continues into March with World Birth Defects Day.
