New Zealand’s participation in Rare Disease Day goes back to 2010. Since then, patient associations from New Zealand have used the occasion to educate the public and raise money through fundraising events. Previous highlights of Rare Disease Day in New Zealand include a photo competition, a run around the Bays of Auckland and a cocktail evening in Wellington. Symposiums focusing on enabling clinicians, researchers and patients to work together to optimise progress have also taken place.Â
In 2020 Rare Disorder NZ held an event at Parliament to call for Fair for Rare. The event called for acknowledgement of the common challenges faced by people living with a rare disease, along with a commitment to address these challenges through the development of a New Zealand National Rare Disorder Framework.
