In Burkina Faso, participation in Rare Disease Day began in 2010. The event has served to help raise awareness among the general public, in addition to serving as a platform to share information on rare diseases throughout the country. One highlight of Rare Disease Day in Burkina Faso was the Open Day for medical students to learn more about rare diseases that took place in 2010.
In 2015, a game of “Boccia” was organised in the city of Ouagadougou, uniting members of the community with rare disease and handicapped students. Playing the sport together, they lived out the year’s theme of Hand-in-hand, day-by-day.
