Mastocytosis: Life Beyond a Diagnosis

The story of Lucas

My name is Lucas and I was diagnosed with Mastocytosis when I was a baby, so I don’t remember life without the disease. I’ve grown up taking medicine daily and being careful to avoid triggers like certain foods, stress, and extreme heat.

Now, my favorite thing to do is play basketball, both competitively and for fun. I’m so thankful for medication, my doctors, and the improvements of my symptoms because when I was little we weren’t sure if I would be able to participate in team sports, something that’s so much a part of who I am. Sometimes I have a reaction, but it doesn’t last long anymore and it’s always worth it.

Because of Mastocytosis, I am more compassionate and more understanding of others’ conditions. I’ve learned not to accept limitations as defeat and use it as motivation instead.
