The story of Kat
I have been diagnosed with diabetes insipidus and have been managing it effectively with a desmopressin spray for 18+ months. It all started over Easter 2017 where I was out for a drink with friends and I found myself having to drink pints of water with my G&T. I also couldn’t stop needing a wee. The thirst and need to wee got worse to the point where I went to the doctors. Several misdiagnosises of water infections, a relocation and change in GP later, I finally was tested for DI. Initially this was by blood and urine samples but the water deprivation test confirmed it. At this point I was drinking and passing 15 litres a day, and not sleeping more than an hour from needing the loo! I was also planning my wedding and even cancelled my honeymoon because I wasn’t sure I would be treated in time! But I was thankfully, and once under the endocrinologist’s care and on desmopressin, I’m 100% back to normal. After my honeymoon, I had an MRI scan which confirmed my CDI was idiopathic, meaning no underlying cause could be established. Today, I allow my thirst to dictate my fluid intake and I take the spray 2x a day. Other than that I crack on as normal. I’ll forever be grateful for the great sleep I get now with the spray! It’s a pretty rare condition, and once under control, is easy to live with. I’m just thankful there’s a good treatment available to me.Â
