The story of Mallory
Our son was born with BASM Syndrome (Billiary Atresia Splenic Malformation). Billiary Atresia occurs in 1 out of every 18,000 people. What our son has occurs in even fewer within that statistic. Billiary Atresia is where the bile ducts do not form/work properly and inhibit the flow of bile, building up in the liver and eventually causing liver failure requiring a liver transplant. Our son also has intestine, heart and spleen deformities as well as having sacral agenesis (meaning he is missing the 4th & 5th vertebrae and coccyx) and a neurogenic bladder (meaning he cannot empty his bladder fully, thus causing kidney damage if not treated adequately). There is little known about what causes Billiary Atresia or the conditions that can sometimes occur in correspondence with it, but I hope that one day people with this condition have a much easier life. Or even better, we can prevent it.
