The story of wendy
2009 was the year which I will never forget. I have had a lot of ops on my spine and again my back was troublesome. Neuro surgeon decided to open up and check the screws as he could not find a problem with the bone. When I came out of recovery room I was vomiting big time. They did blood tests and decided to do scans of the abdomen and there it was! A tumor the size of a rugby ball. I was devistated. A biopsy was done and Gist was discovered. Gleevec was administered for 3 months. Nausea was the worst and the first operation was done. The surgeon removed Spleen, tail of Pancreas and half stomach. I was hospitalized for 1 month as I got sepsis and I thought my days were over! When I left the hospital I was only home for a week when my Panreas, what was left, started to leak so into hospital again, drain inserted to clear the mess.
I was good for 18 months thereafter and the Oncologist took me off the Gleevec.
A year on and blow me down, the Gist returned in the abdomen, top of stomach attaching itself to the diagphram . Back on the Gleevec for 3 months and then into hospital for the operation. Something went terribly wrong when I was in theatre, all my muscles shut down and was put into an induced coma. I recovered on the third day and again in hospital for 1 month. Pain started again in the diaghphram area3 months later and back I went to Oncologist whereby he ordered another scan. Low and behold the Gist tumor was still there! They had not removed it! And not told me. A long story cut short spoke with the surgeon and he acknowledged that it was a dangerous operation and vowed he would not do anymore operations on me so now on Gleevec for life.
I am doing well at the moment, puffy eyes, fatigue but never give up, keep yourself surrounded by love and friendship. I know I will have to fight it and I WILL and CAN.
