Living and Thriving with GT

The story of Peter

I am an advocate, an athlete, and a fighter. I was born with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia (GT), a rare genetic bleeding disorder that has shaped my journey in countless ways. I have learned to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, strength, and a deep appreciation for my body’s ability to adapt.

From an early age, I faced frequent nosebleeds, bruising, and the constant risk of anemia. I endured hospital visits, surgeries, and procedures to manage excessive bleeding. My most challenging moments included a gastrointestinal bleed that left me in the hospital and an elbow surgery in high school due to overuse from playing tennis. Despite these obstacles, I refused to let GT define my limits.

Growing up, sports became an essential part of my life. I swam competitively and played tennis, which helped strengthen my body and prevent excessive bleeding. However, after high school, I stopped physical activity for a while, and my body suffered from it. My elbow stiffened, my bleeds worsened, and I felt unwell overall. That all changed when I started weightlifting. Strength training improved my physical health and helped me better withstand medical challenges.

Over the years, I’ve learned valuable lessons about living with GT. First, be mindful of alcohol. I once experienced a severe GI bleed that I believe was triggered by drinking, and since then, I’ve been extremely cautious. Second, movement is medicine. Staying active has been a game-changer for me, keeping my body strong and more resilient in the face of medical setbacks.

While GT has presented challenges, it has also shaped me into the person I am today—determined, disciplined, and grateful for every victory, no matter how small. I have found ways to live fully and thrive, and I hope my story gives others with GT a sense of hope and empowerment.

I strongly recommend joining a support group; this one has been amazing for me: facebook.com/groups/GlanzmannsThrombasthenia
